Bryan ISD Students Named National Champions in Food Contest

Bryan ISD students and Brazos County 4-H members Abigayle Williams, Hannah Czajkowski and Olivia Williams were named national champions Tuesday at the National 4-H Food Challenge Contest in Dallas.

Czajkowki, Bryan High, and the Williams sisters, Bryan Collegiate, beat out 46 teams from across Texas at the State 4-H Food Challenge Contest in June to qualify for the national contest.

The National 4-H Food Challenge brings together the best and brightest teams from across the nation for a head-to-head competition that includes culinary expertise, food knowledge and public speaking skills. Teams receive a bag of mystery ingredients and have 40 minutes to prepare a dish. Teams then proceed to a judging panel where they give a presentation and answer questions regarding their food preparation, nutrition and food safety knowledge.

“We’ve been competing together as a team for the past three years,” Williams said. “Early on we decided to set our goal high. We challenged ourselves to win all four major Texas food challenge contests and then win Nationals. We worked hard and practiced and practiced and practiced some more. We won the Houston Livestock Show, the State Fair of Texas, the Heart O’ Texas Fair and then the State 4-H contest. Today we won Nationals, and our goal became our reality. We couldn’t be happier.”

Food Challenge is a contest of the 4‑H program, the nation’s largest youth development organization.
